  Written so that it would be constantly changing, Cinematic does revolve around the 8-bar chord progression laid out in the first 8 bars. This foundation never goes away it just gets elaborated upon to the point of being indistinct. The concept was that different sections could be sampled to create a soundtrack to an entire movie. The string solo in the middle was improvised and gives an ethos to the piece characteristic of jazz yet feels precisely formulated. The last eight bars of the solo start an interchanging accent on 3 of the 4 beats in each measure. This continues through a tranquil arpegiated transition that gives rise to real big drums and a deep cello harmony that brings the might and fury. The ASRD modulation on the piano accompanied by the bass synths pounding presence create a menacing force and spill out into kick drum overdrive hyper-rhythm. The string melodies build intensity with a call and answer type interlude that culminates in a recap of the pieces 8-bar structure. The drums at this point start to melt away the electronic takes over. The musical space seems to dissolve only to have a 4-bar climactic recursion of the previous instrumentation accompanied by a reverb sweep that carries you to the last string chord. ... more
